documentary

Silver Rush

This video features the history of Sandon, British Columbia. Sandon was the site of a silver mining boom in the late 1890's and early 1900's. The video is commercially available through the Sandon Historical Society. http://www.slocanlake.com/sandon/

One Less Orchid

This is the story of the endangered Garry Oak Meadow environment on the north pacific coast of Canada. The meadows are one of the rarest environments in Canada and are endangered by suburban development.

Colleen McRory's Slocan Valley

Colleen McRory was one of Canada's best known and loved environmental activists. She was interviewed for the documentary Silver Rush. This video was created from the footage of that interview. Colleen died recently in her beloved Slocan Valley. Watch it now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqK5KFWEyCY

Jack's Old Boat

One of the most facinating relics of Kooteney Valley history is the paddlewheeler S.S. Moyie. This short video is a document of an interview with Jack Morris of Kaslo. Jack and a friend singlehandedly rescued the S.S. Moyie from being destroyed at the end of its useful life as a cargo and passenger ship on Kootenay Lake. experimental

Walking Tent
This short video was made using archival standard 8 mm film. It was shot in Cornwall in the 1950s. I was interested in using the images of hands stitching fabric as the dissolving element between the sections of footage.

Floating Yellow Sweater
This short video was made using archival standard 8 mm film. It was shot in Cornwall in the 1950s. I was drawn to the footage by the melancholy in the footage. At the time I was editing this film, one of my students, Laura Gainey, was lost at sea and drown. She was swept off the tall ship Picton Castle. A friend told me they could hear her cries in the water for hours but could not see her. As I worked on the video I felt it started to tell her story without my intention. Phantasm, the sound track, is the original composition of the sound artist Kevin MacLeod. Watch it now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvdGwl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvdGwl

Watertime

I live in one of the wettest climates in North America and have always had an affinity for water. A number of years ago I wanted to swim with my video camera to experience that environment in a mediated manner rather than a direct experience. I sacrificed my old digital video camera and pulled it underwater in a variety of contraptions. Then I reviewed my existing footage and brought out anything that spoke to the concept of the shallow surface film of water. This is known as the miniscus and is the surface that water striders walk on and fish see us through. I am fascinated with how we break through the miniscus and how we can see from below that structure. I used archival super 8 film and standard 8 film for some of the clips. I see Watertime as a kind of diving into and jumping out of the miniscus. Watch it now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-RTeW4c-94

Cat-spin

Cat-Spin is an experimental digital remix of vintage super 8 film. The video tracks the concept of aging through the clock like mediation of a spinning cat. Made in 2009 length 3 minutes 27 seconds.

Trailerdance

I'm fond of trailers. I used this one for a lot of my art and video projects. Trailerdance came from a Media Net Victoria program called Dance for the Camera. This is a dance video where 2 dancers fight for possession of the trailer. Watch it now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX-dkNMkXpk

Patternpiece

This is a short animation of a tango between Barbie and Ken. It turns nasty and the dancers trade and lose their heads. Watch it now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhPPvtNhAgl
